CFC KIDS’ VILLAGE 2005“Kids would always be kids”, I am sure you know that saying well, and I sure do now more than ever after CFC 6th Caribbean Conference- Kids’ Village from Saturday 13th August to Sunday 14th August. The Kids’ Village was for the kids of the Couples for Christ members who were participating in the conference. The two days were filled with song, dance, talks, painting, acting and a lot of “Auntie may I…” All in all however it was the best two days I ever had with so many kids.
Twenty-one kids were on hand for the first fun-filled day that we
had planned for them. Clapping
of hands and kiddie voices were heard as they began their praise and
worship session with Liana a YFC member from Paramin/Maraval.
From “Pharaoh Pharaoh” to “Jesus’ love is a bubbling
over” they sang their hearts out with actions and all.
They also enjoyed making animal sounds as part of their getting to
know each other game. Barking,
Hissing, Mooing and Meowing could be heard in the courtyard of the Jean
Pierre complex. They also joined the adults for part of their praise and
worship session and the opening prayer before returning inside to enjoy
the movie “Ice Age”. We
sat in awe as the kids sat laughing at the movie before the first actors
name even appeared on the screen, but then again “Kids would always be
kids”. Once lunch was over it was time to bring in the first speaker, yours truly. “God made me special because He loves me” was the topic but these were kids we were dealing with so it was not your typical talk. They were broken up into groups and given paper from a sketchpad, which they used to put their handprints on using poster paints. Once done, they were asked what was different about all the handprints. “Some are bigger than the other”, “That one is small’, “That one has six fingers”, were just some of the responses that we were given. Once they understood that each of their prints were unique just as every part of their body; ears, nose, lips elbows and feet, they were made to recite “God made me special because He loves me”. I then asked them to remember that always and to say it to their parents as soon as they saw them. They then went straight into arts and crafts session and then the workshops. They were able to take part in singing, drama, modeling and dancing workshops, which they enjoyed to the fullest. Some were a little hesitant to sing at first but with the coaxing of Liana they finally sang a bit. The dance workshop was also a sight to see as the learnt steps to the first chorus of Revelation by Kurt Franklin. They also excitedly took part in the modeling and acting workshop as they learnt to walk the walk and how to talk the talk. It was a happy and sad moment as we ushered them back to their parents and prepared for the next day. I was hardly in the door of the Kids’ Village area on the second day when I heard, “Hi Auntie”. A group of kids were all ready for what we had in store for them, and I was sure excited for the day we had plan. We then again joined the adults for praise and worship before going to play a couple games in the courtyard with them. Joe Duran then asked that all the kids join the other youths and rest of the CFC family in the main hall for his remarks. He told them that soon they would be taking over the positions now held by the adults and that they need to put God first in order to conquer the evils of our society. As I said before, kids would always be kids, and their attention span was surly that of kids. After twenty to thirty minutes of listening they began to turn and twist, so we quietly took them back into their area. This was to be a short day as it was also the last of the CFC conference and would end with Holy Mass at 2.30 with a procession to St. Theresa’s R.C. Church preceding it. Once they were settled, it was time to hand out the special awards that we had planned for them. Mr. and Ms Star Kids, Leonardo da Vinci, Elmo and Zoë, Spiderman, Power Puff girls, Mother Theresa, Mr. and Ms Clean and Spongebob were just a few of the awards that were given out to the kids. They were all excited as they collected their certificates and prizes, which were opened as soon as they got it. My heart was filled with such love for these kids despite how much juice mess we had to clean; complaints or “I want my mummy” we got. God is truly Enough and watching the eyes of the little ones made me realize that once we put the children of the nation in His hands everything would be okay. Once the award ceremony was over and we thanked the kids for the wonderful time we had with them the parents started to arrive and in some cases we had to take the kids to their parents. Yeah we were tired after, we had headaches but we knew that in some way our little effort at the Kids’ Village touched these little ones in some way and would continue to do so once we stayed at their side.Kalifa
